Jujitsu

Jujitsu is a martial art that originated in Japan, and is centered around yielding to the force provided by an opponent’s attack to apply counter techniques. The name itself means “gentle/compliant/yielding art”, demonstrating the ethos of the technique in the name itself.

There are several different techniques that can be utilized in Jujitsu including throwing and trapping, locking, pinning, gouging, grappling, striking and kicking, disengagements, and even biting in some schools. Generally, however, there is a limited amount of striking taught in Jujitsu schools since the purpose of Jujitsu is to use your opponent’s force against them instead of initiating your own attack. Jujitsu can be called an art of defense for offence for this reason.

If you are interested in learning a martial art that involves weapons, visit a local Jujitsu studio to find out if they work with weapons. Many Jujitsu schools traditionally taught the use of weapons in fighting, and many modern schools continue this tradition. Jujitsu is a great martial art for people hoping to learn self-defense, and is a great thing to teach children to teach confidence and responsibility in addition to teaching them how to defend themselves without initiating an attack.
